Lovely dog
Cheers
Great to see the F1 race worn Rotary Watches Stanley-B.R.M. helmet there in the P207
Yes very cool! Cheers!
If I had LP looking after my 'race torana' I would be wining more than I am now! What a legend. Please keep delivering amazing videos. 70s 80s 90s Bathurst ftw.
Cheers
Nothing better than Bathurst history from the master himself LP.
Not wrong!
I'm sure your running a hi revving diff hear than you & Greg had in 93. Wouldn't be surprised if you've used a 253 block for less weight coz from what I understand 308-253 difference in the wall thickness in the motor casting
Yes we document this quite a lot, it has a 3.5 diff in it now but back then either 3.25 or 3.33. 308 block with some beefed up casting areas. Cheers
Can I have a go please Larry. Promise I won't do any damage yer. Hope you fix the tacho & temp gauge before I have a few laps.
Both all in working order when we went to NZ in January! Cheers!!
Larry’s my 3rd favorite driver after (brocky and dicky boy of course) such a legend
How good! Cheers!!
@@perkinsengineering no worries mate
@@Bimshelfahdwelf7973 👍
Where do you get the alloy filter mounts from? I cannot find them anywhere. Most places I just get a blank look when I ask for them. Thanks.
Yeah they are incredibly rare these days! Originally a Ryco part but unobtainable today

Iron Lion!!
I've seen these Transporters many a time over the country of Old school cars being transported. From the 19th GT Nationals at Bathurst , to Hidden Valley Raceway in the NT. I've never asked the question. But how do you guys know when its in position on the loader to not take it over the edge up top fellas ?
I think you mean, how does the tail gate not lift the car too high? They are designed to mechanically stop at the height of the ramps in the transporter. Cheers!
@@perkinsengineering No when you guys roll the car backwards how does it not roll off the end mate is what I mean .
@@stevepierce3509 oh either someone is in it with a foot on the brake pedal, or you run out to wheel chocks/stops. Always a bit nerve wracking!
GEEZ LAZZA, the smile on your face tells a thousand stories matey. Good on ya mate. So much history there in this car and you are no doubt super proud to have her back up and going mate. Love it 250 % well done.
Cheers!!
LP's smile when it fires up is memorably exciting to watch loving watching LP and yourself bring back a Race Car that Larry would have a lot of memories invested in, So humble to watch you as his son see this dream progress into reality for BOTH of YOU guys.
Always a good time when they fire up for the first time!!
Bloody Legend LP. I bet this vehicle brings back many many memories of racing the Rallye for you Legend. Jack , you must be so so proud of the Old Boy to get in and have an honest hard crack punching out the resto on an iconic racecar your Father Raced all them years ago in an Iconic Race that sadly no longer exists and is now only memories to the few that Raced it aswell as us old buggers that watched it in Awe mate. LP & Jack, A TRUE PIECE OF MOTORING HISTORY IN THE RACE CAR WORLD RIGHT THERE Well done legends, absolutely love it.
Yes very proud! Cheers!!
Absolutely loving this footage of LP's VW Jack. Not to mention the Old Boy wearing the Legendry Boiler suit Overalls which I grew up with as a kid entering the workforce wearing back in the day of my trade / Apprentice days. Great footage guys , keep us all updated on the Beetle Please.
Haha yeah not many these days wear overalls!! Cheers!!
What area is the Farm guys and what are you growing on it ?
In the Mallee District of far, north west Victoria. We grow cereals/grain, mostly wheat and barley; but also lupens, lentils
I bet Larry still fits in all that gear too
Good chance!!!!
Que motor tiene para que corre asi amigo
VW
Larry Perkins the legend, in more ways than one, congratulations Larry, thanks for the memories.
Cheers!!

Nice video, next time can you tell us some specs of the engine- ie comp ratio , valve sizes and exhaust diameters . Love to know how he got 500+hp out of a 5ltr . Great work
You can find a lot of this information online or in magazines like Street Machine who covered engine specs in 1993/94 and again in 2022/23. 1993 Engine was 10:1, 2.020" inlet valves and standard exhaust, 550hp 415ft/lbs torque at 5500rpm
Hey mate what's the model of that saas sest was is a one off
Not sure on the specs, these were very popular late 80's and early 90's but they are very rare today!
Really nice to see another car in the mix, I was only a year old when the VL road car started production 😂 Go get em in the enduros with JC and Snowy River
Thanks!!!
Bloody epic!
Cheers!!!
Wasn't the Tom Walkinshaw "bum drag" at Bathurst '88 caused by rear suspension binding causing a breakage? This after the Brits supposedly ignored the Australian advice?
Yes and quite small bolts I believe!!!
So runs a ford diff and still has a shity Centre bearing in the tail shaft still just a crumble door shitbox
Wow! That "shitty" tail shaft won 3 x Bathurst's and ran strong and reliable for us until 2009 when we sold up! No need to try make the wheel more round! Cheers for watching!
@@perkinsengineering yeah as a panel beater by trade I put a floor jack under the tow bar on a VL and it put kinks in both rear quarter panels the chassis is weak and light as a feather to me there a glorified holden carmirra junk good 👍 job on getting it to stick to track
Nah thank you for what ya do jack. These old cars have a soul exactly what the new cars don’t have! 👍
Glad you like them! Cheers!!
The shirt is too white😂, I've got one, scared to wear it😂 great gear tho!
Hahaha yeah not the best colour for working in the shed!! Cheers!!
I could watcht these detail video`s all day long, and then not get anything done in my own garage :) Thankyou again. Love it.
Cheers!!
What's the size of the rod end bearings on the suspension rods?
They are varying sizes, any ones in particular?
@@perkinsengineering The lower front suspension arm, the very front one on the drag arm and the inner of the lower arm. What's the size of the rear radius rods?
That's a ripper , that really shows how much engineering was in them in that era thanks to your Dad . I'm assuming front callipers are Harrop too. Thanks Jack look forward to next episode.
Yes Harrop 4 pot front calipers too, same as the 93 and 94 rockets. Cheers!!
did pe010 ever run the compressed air jacking system (where the cut outs are on the side skirt)? i thought i noticed threaded holes up there as you looked underneath it
Is it true that the VP 5Lt engines did have a LP letters welded to the back of the block, just asking as there's rumors that Larry Welded his LP initials on the blacks he used for the engines he had etc. 👌✌👍🦘
Yes they have "LP" on the back
@@perkinsengineering Thank you for the reply, cheers, remember selling aircraft 316 welding wire to russell at the Moorabbin factory workshop back in 1999,( which was used to tie off the engines areas after completion, so that no teams can open up the engines and change anything) also still have the VT racing poster signed by LP. cheers 👌✌🦘👍👍
Absolutely love it
Cheers!!
As I have mentioned on a previous video, I met your Dad on one occasion many years ago when he presented his view on what high reliability looks like. I have never forgotten that meeting and the inspirational way your father spoke about machinery in general, he inspired me to be the valued "hands on" Engineer I am now, thank you Larry. So glad the "acorn didn't fall far from the tree", good on ya Jack, great video as usual.
Cheers!!
Looking great Jack! Interesting setup of the RARB and 3 link......
Cheers!!
Didn't this car get prorested in 92 in qualifying because teams couldn't believe the turn of speed it generated and in the top ten the tv commentator made a comment about it being an old car and he quipped "its pretty new under the bonnet!"
Someone even stuck a Ford badge on the front of it!!!
@@perkinsengineering the gaul of it all!
This came up in my feed today, I had to watch it. I met LP a few times when the ATCC came to Lakeside in the late 80's and early 90's as a child. Good video Jack!
Good stuff, thanks for watching! Don't forget to like the video and subscribe to our channel!! Cheers!!
Thanks Jack, great. Was the VL body more slippery than the later cars or does it just look that way?
Well I guess so, largely because the later cars had big rear wings and bigger front spoilers so that equals more drag and downforce.
I want one of those cross ram manifolds for my Holden V8.🔥
There's one for sale on our website! Check it out here: perkinsmotorsport.com/collections/featured-products/products/perkins-engineering-prototype-slide-manifold
Good to see under the old girl. You still have the old vl motor lying around? Maybe, if your not to busy, a vl commodore replica in castrol colours you could build?
Haha unfortunately not!
As someone who stills plays in car clubs with these early model Commodores it would have been nice to see more detail of how the K-frame was " modified" to accept the adjustable radius rod instead of the normal Z style bar and the lower control arms.
Oh ok, basically only another set of holes, nothing serious in terms of modifications!
Love seeing the old L.P cars from the day. Being a vw guy, love to see more of Larrys Beetle
Cheers, yeah that's something we can look to do in the future!
Thoroughly enjoyed this Jack, reinforced what a powerhouse Perkins Engineering is in our motorsport history. Also obvious how your knowledge is expanding - you know these rockets inside and out!
Cheers!!
Jack has taken the time to reply to most of these comments, folks. Please like the comments & replies to help YT promote this video. The more interest we can attract to our sport, the longer we can keep it alive before bureaucratic grubs smother it with dreary electric junk.
Cheers!!
I love the cooler designs and arrangements PE has designed.
Cheers!!
The engineering & detail is truly amazing under there! Thanks for showing.
Our pleasure!! Cheers!!
Any man with a heartbeat loves the VL Walkinshaw. Awesome hot rod Jack
Cheers!!
Awesome
Cheers!!
It's interesting that the VN Group A didn't have a front undertray.
Don't worry, initially the VP didn't either!
Jack - great video as always. Quick one - on these restored rockets, are they covered in PPF so they can run again on track?
That's up to the car owner. This one has a clear film over the front of it actually. Cheers!!
